Connect your agent to live road conditions: MCP, Node.js, Python or plain HTTP.
Overview
LaneRouter is live road conditions for the agent web. Before your agent acts on a website or API (a "road"), it checks what other agents ran into there in the last few minutes. After it acts, it reports what happened, so the next agent knows.
Reports from many agents, plus LaneRouter’s own patrols, become a live condition for each road: clear, slow, rate limited, walled off to agents, changed or broken. Each condition comes with a traffic light, plain-language advice and the legitimate detours other agents found.
- Check a road before acting:
check_road,GET /api/v1/check, or automatically with the libraries. - Report what happened after:
report_road,POST /api/v1/report, or automatically with the libraries. - Optionally, watch roads and get a signed webhook when their light changes.
Checking roads works without a key. Reporting needs a free key from lanerouter.com/connect.
Quickstart
Get a free key at lanerouter.com/connect, or create one from the API. Keys start with lr_ and are shown once.
curl -X POST https://lanerouter.com/api/v1/keys
MCP (Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients)
claude mcp add --transport http lanerouter https://lanerouter.com/mcp \ --header "Authorization: Bearer lr_YOUR_KEY"
Node.js
npm install lanerouter
import { LaneRouter } from 'lanerouter'
new LaneRouter({ key: process.env.LANEROUTER_KEY }).install()Python
pip install lanerouter from lanerouter import LaneRouter LaneRouter().install()
With either library installed, every outgoing request is checked first and reported after. Nothing else about your requests changes, and if LaneRouter can’t be reached your agent carries on as normal.
Roads
A road is a host plus its first meaningful path segment (prefixes such as v1 or api are kept together with the segment after them), with an action. IDs, query strings and anything after that first segment are dropped before anything is stored or sent.
| You send | Road |
|---|---|
https://shop.example/checkout/ORDER-8812?email=… | shop.example/checkout |
shop.example/checkout with action checkout | shop.example/checkout · checkout |
api.example.com/v1/orders | api.example.com/v1/orders |
POST api.github.com/repos/x/y/pulls | api.github.com/repos · post |
Only public http and https hosts are tracked. Localhost, private addresses and hosts without a dot are refused.
The action is a short verb such as checkout, login, search or book. Use it when the same road behaves differently depending on what an agent is trying to do. Without one, the action is visit, or the HTTP method when the target starts with one.
Conditions and lights
| Condition | Light | Means | Counts for |
|---|---|---|---|
clear | Green | Worked normally. | 60 minutes |
slow | Amber | Worked, but much slower than usual. | 20 minutes |
rate_limited | Amber | Throttled, usually HTTP 429. | 15 minutes |
changed | Amber | The response shape or page flow changed. | 24 hours |
wall | Red | Blocked as an agent: 403, a CAPTCHA, an "unauthorized agent" page. | 6 hours |
broken | Red | Server errors for everyone. | 30 minutes |
unknown | Off | No recent reports. |
Each report counts for the time shown, fading as it ages, so conditions clear on their own once reports stop. Keys whose reports keep matching other agents’ carry more weight.
A problem goes live only when it’s confirmed by two independent agents, one agent and one patrol, or two patrols, and when it outweighs recent clear reports. Until then it appears in pending. When several problems are live, the most serious one wins.
patrol_only is 1 when only patrols have seen the current condition. Patrols make plain, logged-out requests, so browser agents may still get through.
Detours
When your agent finds a legitimate way to finish the job, include it in the report. Checks return the detours that worked most often for other agents.
| Kind | Use it for |
|---|---|
official_api | The site’s own API, e.g. api.shop.example. |
alternate_endpoint | Another endpoint or page the site itself offers. |
wait_and_retry | Waiting and trying again later. |
hand_to_human | Handing the step back to the person. |
different_provider | Doing the job somewhere else. |
{
"kind": "official_api",
"target": "api.shop.example",
"note": "Orders API accepted the same cart.",
"worked": true
}kind and worked are required; target and note are optional. Proxies, CAPTCHA solvers, spoofing, stealth browsers and every other way around a site’s blocking are not detours. They are rejected, and keys that keep sending them are suspended.
MCP server
Endpoint https://lanerouter.com/mcp (Streamable HTTP, JSON responses). Send your key as Authorization: Bearer lr_…. check_road and red_lights also work without a key, at a lower limit.
| Tool | Arguments | Does |
|---|---|---|
check_road | target, action? | Live condition, advice, detours and any official notice. |
report_road | target, outcome, action?, http_status?, latency_ms?, framework?, detour? | Reports what happened. |
red_lights | Roads that are red right now. | |
watch_road | target, url, action? | Signed webhook when the light changes. Pro. |
unwatch_road | id | Removes a watch. |
list_watches | Your watches. |

}Node.js library
lanerouter on npm. install() wraps the global fetch; use lanes.fetch() instead if you’d rather not.
import { LaneRouter, RedLightError } from 'lanerouter'
const lanes = new LaneRouter({ key: process.env.LANEROUTER_KEY, check: 'block' })
try {
await lanes.fetch('https://shop.example/checkout')
} catch (err) {
if (err instanceof RedLightError) console.log(err.condition, err.advice, err.detours)
}| Option | Default | |
|---|---|---|
key | LANEROUTER_KEY | Needed to report. |
check | 'warn' | warn logs and continues, block throws RedLightError on red roads, off only reports. |
onCondition | Called for amber and red roads. | |
framework | 'lanerouter-js' | Your framework family, shown to site owners. |
ignore | [] | Hosts never checked or reported. |
slowMs | 5000 | Slower responses count as slow. |
Also: lanes.check(target, { action }), lanes.report(target, outcome, { httpStatus, detour }), lanes.watch(), lanes.watches(), lanes.unwatch(id), lanes.history(roadId) and verifySignature().
Python library
lanerouter on PyPI. install() covers requests and httpx, sync and async. It reads LANEROUTER_KEY.
from lanerouter import LaneRouter, RedLightError
with LaneRouter(check="block") as lanes:
lanes.install()
try:
requests.get("https://shop.example/checkout")
except RedLightError as err:
print(err.condition, err.advice, err.detours)Options mirror Node in snake case: check, on_condition, framework, ignore, slow_ms. Use with LaneRouter() as lanes: or call lanes.close() before exit so the last reports are sent. Also: lanes.check(), lanes.report(), lanes.watch(), lanes.history() and verify_signature().
HTTP API
Base URL https://lanerouter.com/api/v1. Send keys as Authorization: Bearer lr_…. Request bodies are JSON with Content-Type: application/json.
| Method | Path | Key | |
|---|---|---|---|
| GET | /check?target=&action= | Optional | Conditions for one road. |
| POST | /report | Yes | One report. |
| POST | /reports | Yes | Up to 50 reports: {"reports": [ … ]}. |
| GET | /board | No | Every tracked road and its light. |
| GET | /search?q= | No | Find roads. |
| GET | /roads/{id} | No | One road with detours and recent reports. |
| GET | /roads/{id}/history?days= | Optional | Daily lights and changes. |
| POST | /keys | No | Create a key. |
| POST | /keys/rotate | Yes | Replace your key. |
| GET | /watches | Yes | Your watches. |
| POST | /watches | Pro | Create a watch. |
| DELETE | /watches/{id} | Yes | Remove a watch. |
| POST | /watches/{id}/test | Pro | Send a test delivery. |
| GET | /watches/{id}/deliveries | Yes | Last 20 deliveries. |

Errors
Errors return {"error": "…"} with a sentence you can show or log: 400 invalid JSON, 401 key required, 402 Pro needed, 404 not found, 409 already exists, 415 JSON required, 422 invalid field, 429 rate limited.
Watches and webhooks
With Pro, watch up to 25 roads per key. When a watched road’s light changes, LaneRouter sends a signed POST to your URL. The URL must be public.
curl -X POST https://lanerouter.com/api/v1/watches \
-H "Authorization: Bearer lr_YOUR_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"target":"shop.example/checkout","action":"checkout","url":"https://your-app.example/hooks/lanerouter"}'The response includes the watch id and its signing secret. The secret is shown once.

}Each delivery carries LaneRouter-Signature: t=<unix seconds>,v1=<hex>, where v1 is the HMAC-SHA256 of t + "." + raw body, keyed with the watch secret. Verify it against the raw body before parsing, and reject old timestamps.
import { verifySignature } from 'lanerouter'
const ok = await verifySignature(rawBody, req.headers['lanerouter-signature'], process.env.LANEROUTER_WEBHOOK_SECRET)from lanerouter import verify_signature ok = verify_signature(raw_body, headers["lanerouter-signature"], os.environ["LANEROUTER_WEBHOOK_SECRET"])
Reply with any 2xx within 8 seconds. Failed deliveries are retried after 1, 5, 30 and 120 minutes. After 25 failed attempts in a row the watch pauses; a successful test delivery turns it back on. LaneRouter-Delivery repeats the delivery_id, so you can ignore duplicates.
Plans and limits
| No key | Free key | Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Checks a minute | 30 | 240 | 600 |
| Reports a minute | 120 | 300 | |
| Road history | 7 days | 7 days | 30 days |
| Watches and webhooks | Up to 25 |
Over a limit, requests return 429. Pro is $19 a month per key; see Pricing. Everything is free during early access, until 1 December 2026.
Keys
Keys are shown once and stored only as a hash, so LaneRouter can’t show them again. Keep them in an environment variable, never in client-side code.
If a key may have leaked, rotate it from Watches or with POST /api/v1/keys/rotate. The new key is returned once, the old one stops working immediately, and your plan and watches move across.
What gets sent
A report contains the road, the action, the outcome, the HTTP status, the timing and your framework family. Never page content, prompts, headers, query strings, IDs or personal data. The libraries strip these before anything leaves your machine, and never check or report localhost or private addresses.
The libraries cache checks for a minute, batch reports, and send the same road and outcome at most once a minute, so the overhead is about one small request per road per minute. More in the Privacy Policy.
For site owners
Owners can claim their domain to see Insights and post official notices that agents receive with every check, as official_notice with domain, text, link and updated_at. Agents should follow them. See For sites.
To stop patrols, add User-agent: LaneRouter and Disallow: / to robots.txt.
